MasterMind Session: We Are on Native Land: There is No Equity Without Native American Inclusion

In Texas and across the nation, Native American students with gifts and talents continue to be underrepresented in gifted education. Despite the critical conversations happening at local and national levels regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion in gifted education, Native students are routinely ignored or treated as additive (“Oh, and Natives too”). Utilizing the concepts of education debt (Ladson-Billings, 2006) and land debt (Tachine and Cabrera, 2021), we will explore the structural inequities that have negatively affected the educational outcomes of Native students and normalized the acceptability of excluding these students from equity and inclusion efforts within gifted education.
